Why go01
If a regular offers you one of the seven seats at Kawamura, the offer is the way in, because the counter books by referral only and Tabelog shows no phone number for it. What you are joining is a steak counter that has won a Tabelog award every year from 2017 to 2026: Silver in 2018 and again in 2026, Bronze in 2017 and in each year from 2019 to 2025, places on its Tabelog 100 steak and teppanyaki lists in 2021, 2022, 2024 and 2025, and a score of 4.36 from 214 reviews. It is an evening to plan around wine as well as beef, since Tabelog notes that the house puts weight on its wine and has a sommelier.
What to order02
Fillet steak
- Steak with white truffle, in season
- Consommé, hamburg and curry rice
02What to order
Fillet steakThe dish Time Out singled out in 2009: a fillet cut 8 cm high, from beef the cook chose each day among different breeds.
- Steak with white truffle, in seasonA 2025 column describes steak served with Alba white truffle, cut with a knife.
- Consommé, hamburg and curry riceAlso on Time Out's 2009 list; whatever is left over can be taken home as a sandwich.
- AbaloneA column from June 2026 reports an abalone of more than 1.2 kg.
03The beef
The sources do not name a breed, a grade or a farm for the beef served today. What they keep is Time Out's line from 2009: the cook chose the beef each day, from different breeds, and cut the fillet 8 cm high.
04The story
Tabelog writes the name in kana, かわむら, and lists it under steak in Ginza, Chūō-ku; a 2025 column names the owner only as Kawamura-san. Kawamura is not Bifteck Kawamura, the Kobe chain with a branch in the Ginza Museum Building at 6-5-6 Ginza, and some English-language guides mix the two, so check the name before you count on a booking.
05The practical
Kawamura opens Monday to Saturday, 17:00–22:00, and closes on Sundays and public holidays; it is non-smoking and takes cards but not QR payments. There are no private rooms, but the whole counter can be booked. In 2009 and 2013, newcomers could book only on the first day of each month, and regulars booked their next visit as they left. Time Out gave the address in 2009 as Higashi 5 Building 1F, 7-3-16 Ginza; Tabelog does not publish one today. Tabelog puts the average spend at ¥100,000 or more a head, so agree the evening's budget with your host beforehand.
