Steak in Brisbane: the long read

Queensland had 13.5 million beef cattle in June 2025, about half of Australia's 27.6 million, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Brisbane menus usually name the producer, the days on grain and the marble score of each steak. Stanbroke appears most often: it owns The 203, is the only beef supplier to Black Hide on Caxton Street and is listed at Blackbird and Rich & Rare. Other names include Five Founders, Kidman and Nolans of Gympie, the Darling Downs and Maranoa regions, Australian Wagyu from Westholme and Stone Axe, and Japanese A5 beef at Fatcow, Moo Moo and Rich & Rare.

The city's steak tradition began in its pubs. The Breakfast Creek Hotel, built in 1889–90 in Albion, opened its Spanish Garden steakhouse in 1968, and in its Beer Garden diners still pick their own steak from a chilled cabinet. The Norman Hotel in Woolloongabba has run a steakhouse since 1988. Cha Cha Char, on the Eagle Street Pier from 1997 to 2020, was chosen in 1998 to launch the Meat Standards Australia (MSA) grading program.

Most of the newer steakhouses are in Fortitude Valley (James Street, Agnes Street, Marshall Street) and along the CBD riverfront (Eagle Street, Edward Street, Queen's Wharf). Agnes, opened in 2020, cooks only over wood. It was Gourmet Traveller's Restaurant of the Year 2023 and placed No. 20 in the World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants 2026, where SK Steak & Oyster placed No. 77. Argentine and Brazilian grilling arrived more recently: Navala Churrascaria in 2014, La Boca in 2023 and San Telmo, from Melbourne, in June 2026.

Also in the city: steak menus at pubs such as Gilhooleys, the Hamilton Hotel and The Boatshed in Toowong, and at Vintaged Bar + Grill in the Hilton.

Listed by name, never by payment or score. Facts last verified: Oct. 29, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the beef in Brisbane steakhouses come from?

Almost all of it is Australian, and much is from Queensland, the state with the largest cattle herd. Menus name producers such as Stanbroke, Five Founders, Kidman and Nolans, and regions such as the Darling Downs and Maranoa; some also list Japanese A5 Wagyu.

Where to eat Wagyu in Brisbane?

Several restaurants name their Wagyu: Westholme at Agnes, Stanbroke at Black Hide (Caxton Street) and The 203, Kiwami and Mayura Station at SK Steak & Oyster, Imperial Blossom at Six Acres and Deery's, and Japanese A5 at Fatcow, Moo Moo and Rich & Rare.

Which Brisbane pubs are known for steak?

Two stand out: the Breakfast Creek Hotel in Albion, whose Spanish Garden steakhouse opened in 1968 and whose Beer Garden lets diners choose their steak from a cabinet, and the Norman Hotel in Woolloongabba, with a steakhouse since 1988. Fiasco's at the Morrison Hotel and Deery's at the Story Bridge Hotel are also in pubs.
