Why go

The Kangaroo Point Hotel was built in 1886 and took the name of the new Story Bridge in 1940. The Deery family bought it in 1967, and in 1994 Richard and Jane Deery, the children of Barrie Deery, opened a steak and wine restaurant inside it. Deery's has now run for more than thirty years in what the hotel calls one of the last family-owned and operated hotels in Brisbane. Its September 2026 menu sorts the steaks by how the cattle were raised, under four headings: Wagyu, grass-fed, grain-fed and on the bone; fourteen steaks in all, each with producer, state, marble score and, for most, the days on grain. The hotel says Deery's won Best Restaurant (metropolitan) at the 2024 Queensland Hotels Association awards.

01What to order

02The beef

Four headings. Wagyu: Stone Axe fullblood sirloin (400+ days on grain, MBS 6–7, New South Wales), Imperial Blossom F4 rump cap and bavette (400+ days, MBS 8–9, Queensland), a Margaret River Wagyu-Angus rump (350+ days, MBS 8–9, Western Australia) and a Tajima flat iron (350+ days, MBS 4–5). Grass-fed: Great Southern Pinnacle eye fillet and rib fillet, British breeds at MBS 2+ from Victoria and Tasmania (the menu says they are raised without added hormones or antibiotics), and Little Joe sirloin at MBS 4+. Grain-fed: Ebony Black Angus sirloin and rib fillet (150+ days, MBS 4+, Queensland) and a Pure Prime eye fillet (120+ days, MBS 3+). On the bone: Five Founders rib and T-bone, and a Pinnacle sirloin. The restaurant's page adds that steak is dry-aged in house, subject to availability, without stating the days.

03The fire

The menu heads its steaks "From the Grill" and lists a wood-fired sourdough cob and wood-fire-roasted carrots, so the kitchen keeps a wood fire. No source says whether the steaks are cooked over wood, gas or charcoal. Each steak comes with balsamic-roasted pearl onions and local leaves, and a choice of sauce, butter (black truffle or whipped gorgonzola) or mustard.

04The story

The hotel was built in 1886 as the Kangaroo Point Hotel, one of only seven three-story hotels in Queensland at the time, according to its own history. It became the Story Bridge Hotel in 1940, after the bridge opened. The Deery family bought it in 1967; from 1978 Barrie Deery spent more than a decade restoring it, and in 1980 the old Second World War air-raid shelter was extended into a venue called The Bomb Shelter. In 1994, after a refurbishment, the Lord Mayor, Jim Soorley, reopened the hotel, and Richard and Jane Deery opened their restaurant the same year. Style Magazines, writing in 2025, dated Deery's to 1993; Steakpedia uses the hotel's date, 1994.
