Japanese A5 or Australian MB?

Japanese wagyu is graded with a letter for yield (A to C) and a number from 1 to 5 for quality; A5, the top grade, needs a marbling score (BMS) of 8 to 12. The grade travels with the beef, together with an individual identification number for the animal.

Australian wagyu is graded by AUS-MEAT marble score, written MS or MB, from 0 to 9+; MB4/5 has moderate marbling, MB9+ the most. It is a different system, so an Australian MB9+ and a Japanese A5 are not the same thing.

How to tell if the wagyu is real

Ask for the origin, the grade and the box label, and be wary of a low price. In October 2025 Hanoi police charged four people for selling Indian buffalo meat, injected to imitate marbling, as Japanese wagyu at 400,000–600,000 VND a kilo (Tuoi Tre News).
