Why go

Entrecôte names its beef on the menu, and the name has changed with the years. The Spring Summer 2026 card gives the signature steak frites as Black Onyx 230-day grain-fed Angus; in 2021 and 2022 it was pasture-fed Cape Grim Angus porterhouse; at the start, on Domain Road, it was Hopkins River beef from Adam North. The format has not moved: a steak, frites, and the Secret Herb Butter Sauce, modelled on L'Entrecôte in Paris. Jason M Jones announced the house in November 2014 for a short lease at 133 Domain Road, South Yarra, planned for early December; Concrete Playground covered it in January 2015, and the house dates itself 'depuis 2015'. Conceived as a one-year pop-up, it stayed seven, then opened on Sept. 1, 2021 in a 200-seat room at 142–144 Greville Street, Prahran. In February 2026 it was No. 21 in the Australian top 30 of World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants.

02The beef

Angus, three eras. From late 2014, Hopkins River Beef: sirloin per Concrete Playground, grass-fed Black Angus porterhouse per Broadsheet's 2015 note on the short-lived city branch. From 2021, pasture-fed Cape Grim Angus porterhouse from Tasmania, per Concrete Playground and Time Out. In 2026, the house menu says Black Onyx 230-day grain-fed Angus, while Man of Many, in March, wrote Rangers Valley 'Black Market' 270-day grain-fed; the eye fillet is from Gippsland and the Wagyu sirloin is Pure Black Wagyu. No source states a marble score or any ageing. The sauces are five: the secret herb butter, peppercorn, red wine jus, béarnaise and anchovy butter. The number: 230 days.

03The fire

No source names a grill, a plancha or a fuel for Entrecôte. The menu describes the steak only by its beef and its sauce.

04The story

The model is Le Relais de l'Entrecôte, the one-dish steakhouse opened in 1959 at Porte-Maillot, Paris. Jones, who then ran Friends of Mine, Porgie & Mr Jones and Prix Fixe, took the old Lynch's site at 133 Domain Road from Di and Peter Pausewang on a short lease; the dining room charged A$39 to A$39.90 a head for salad, steak and frites, with Simon Moss as executive chef and a refit by Flack Studio. Broadsheet dates the Domain Road opening to 2014; the house's book is titled Depuis 2015. Steakpedia gives both. An Entrecôte City opened at 6 Alfred Place in September 2015. In April 2021 the lease ended and the house moved to Greville Street, a 200-seat room with fireplaces and oak panelling imported from France, designed by Brahman Perera, Jones's partner and, per Gourmet Traveller, co-owner. Jones's memoir and recipe book, Entrecôte: Depuis 2015, appeared in April 2026 and prints the herb butter sauce for the first time.
