Why go
Lutyens Grill writes the animal first. Every steak on its August 2026 menu opens with the breed, then the cut, the days of aging, the weight and the farm or country: Friesian/Jersey ex-dairy côte de boeuf aged 40 days from West Scotland, Hereford chateaubriand at 30 days, an ox chop from Spain's El Capricho at 100 days. The prime rib, from Herons Farm in Essex, is dry-aged for 45 days and roasted for six hours before it is carved from a trolley. The room was the bank manager's office of the Midland Bank headquarters, now The Ned, and has been open to the public since December 2017. It is No. 35 in World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants 2026 and No. 12 in Europe's 50 Best Steak Restaurants 2026.

02The beef
The board is mostly British, and it leans on ex-dairy and slower-growing cattle. The menu says the meat board comes from a small group of British farms with free-range cattle, regenerative practices and slower-growing herds. Ex-dairy animals feature twice: Friesian/Jersey from West Scotland at 40 days, and Holstein/Shorthorn sirloin from Ireland at 50 days. Hereford chateaubriand and fillet, Shorthorn rib-eye and Angus rump are all aged 30 days; the Shorthorn tomahawk 38. The imports carry grades rather than days: Black Kagoshima A5 wagyu rib-eye (£130) and fillet (£135), a USDA Prime New York strip (£65) and a Jack's Creek wagyu/Angus sirloin from Australia (£100). Herons Farm in Coggeshall, Essex, supplies the prime rib; the house describes it as known for native breeds. The number: 45 days.
03The fire
Hot Dinners wrote in 2017 that the Hereford T-bones and tomahawks are cooked on the grill, and The Nudge in 2018 that most cuts are seared there. No source names the fuel. The prime rib is different: slow-roasted for six hours in the house seasoning, then carved in the room.
04The story
The building at 27–35 Poultry was the Midland Bank headquarters, built between 1924 and 1929 to designs by Edwin Lutyens and listed Grade I; it is now The Ned, named after him. Lutyens Grill occupies the old bank manager's office, with lighting based on an original Lutyens design. For its first year it was open only to members and hotel guests; it opened to the public on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017. In 2018 The Nudge counted about 15 steaks from the British Isles, New Zealand, Japan and Uruguay. In 2025 it was No. 39 in World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants; in 2026, No. 35.
