Why go

In 1965, according to Time Out, Happening began carrying on the spirit of the carritos, the food carts that lined the Costanera along the Río de la Plata, and it still stands on the same riverside avenue. Its menu reads as a record of that lineage: chorizo in bread, as at the old Carrito 55; empanadas to Doña Beba's recipe; charcoal under the grate, as in the first braseros. The family that started it still owns it, now into a third generation. In 2026 it entered World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants at No. 82, and Infobae noted that it has kept its traditional style for more than 60 years; the tables outside look onto the river.

01What to order

  • Asado del centroThe cut Infobae singled out in March 2026: ribs from the center of the rack.
  • Asado banderitaThin strips cut across the center of the rib cage, recommended by Time Out in 2025.
  • Ojo de bifeBlack Angus, 450 g / 16 oz, with crisp potatoes, on the menu Mercado described in 2015.
  • ChorizoPure pork, in bread baked in a clay oven, with criollo chimichurri; Mercado said it follows the ones sold at Carrito 55.
  • Revuelto gramajo and salame chacareroThe Costanera classics Caras named in August 2026.
  • Bife de cuadril, entraña, bife de lomoWith the ojo de bife, the cuts the city tourism office and Time Out list.

02The beef

The sources say little about the animal. Mercado's 2015 list named the 450 g / 16 oz ojo de bife as Black Angus; the city tourism office says the meat is briefly aged, without giving the days. Caras reported in 2026 that the Costanera and Puerto Madero houses share suppliers and identity but differ in technique, format and repertoire; it did not name the suppliers.

03The fire

Charcoal, as at the start. Caras wrote in August 2026 that the original braseros were sheet metal and charcoal, that the Costanera still grills over direct embers, and that Puerto Madero adds a wood-fired oven. The 2015 menu also cooked on the iron, on the chapa, the griddle plate, and in the rescoldo, the hot ash.

04The story

The dates differ by source. Time Out (2026) gives 1965. Mercado wrote in 2015 that the restaurant was turning 50. The city tourism office says it was founded in the 1960s. The Buenos Aires Portal (2024) says it began as a food cart in the 1960s and became a restaurant proper in 1977. Caras tells the family version: Osvaldo and Fernando Brucco's parents, known as el Ronco and Beba, inherited a cart on the river side of the Costanera, then ran the founding Carrito 55 across the road, and the business later moved on to Recoleta and Puerto Madero. Time Out (2025) recalls the artists and young musicians who ate there in the years of the carritos; the Buenos Aires Portal adds Bon Jovi, Joe Cocker and Liza Minnelli. Today Lucas and Francisco Brucco represent the third generation, and Sebastián Tricarico runs the Costanera kitchen. Steakpedia uses 1965.
