Why go

This is the steakhouse for the evening when the room matters as much as the steak, when you are bringing someone who will look up as well as down. The dining room is the old Della Robbia Bar of the Vanderbilt Hotel, built between 1910 and 1913, with shallow Guastavino vaults in pale tile and polychrome ceramics from Rookwood Pottery, and the city made it an interior landmark in 1994. The menu follows the Brooklyn school its founder knew from the inside: a porterhouse for two or more, thick Canadian bacon, German potatoes and creamed spinach, ordered for the table.

02The beef

The menu heads its steaks "Prime steaks & chops" and names a Prime NY sirloin, but gives no weights, grade label or aging days. In a 2018 interview about the group, Peter Zwiener, the founder's son and president of the company, described USDA Prime kept in aging boxes on the premises for up to 28 days, longer on request, and Angus and Black Angus cattle from selected ranches; that account is about the chain, not this house in particular.

03The fire

No source names the broiler or the fuel at Park Avenue.

04The story

Wolfgang Zwiener (1939–2025) spent more than 40 years as a headwaiter at Peter Luger before opening this house in 2004, with his son Peter, and the company says he built it on what he learned there. The chain counted about 35 locations worldwide by 2015, from New Jersey to Japan and South Korea; in New York it now lists Times Square, TriBeCa, Park Avenue and Broadway. Zwiener died in January 2025, at 85. The room itself is older: the Della Robbia Bar is the one part of the Vanderbilt Hotel's interior that survived a 1960s modernization, and the Friends of Terra Cotta campaigned for its protection.

05The practical

4 Park Avenue, at 33rd Street, Murray Hill.
