Why go
Ironbark. A custom wood-fire grill burns Australian ironbark, and the menu is built around it: 'Cooked Over Fire', 'Beef from the Wood Fire Grill', 'Large Cuts from the Wood Fire Grill'. Rockpool Bar & Grill opened at Crown in 2006, by the house's own count, Neil Perry's first restaurant outside Sydney; Gourmet Traveller named it New Restaurant of the Year 2008. All beef is dry-aged in house. The Melbourne menu prints, for each steak, the producer, the breed, the feeding, the marble score and the days of ageing, from 14 to 45. Up to 18 cuts are on at any time, per Man of Many. The room feeds up to 200, Gourmet Traveller wrote in 2007. Sauces run from béarnaise to a fermented jalapeño hot sauce, bone marrow vinaigrette and chimichurri. Since 2021 the operator is Hunter St. Hospitality.

04The story
Neil Perry opened Rockpool in Sydney in 1989. The Melbourne Bar & Grill followed at Crown in 2006, by the house's own count and Man of Many's; Time Out and Wikipedia give 2007, and Gourmet Traveller reviewed it in its September 2007 issue, in its 'frantic opening months', before naming it New Restaurant of the Year 2008. In November 2016 Perry sold the Rockpool Group, its three Bar & Grills included, to the Urban Purveyor Group, which became Rockpool Dining Group; in May 2021 that group split, and the Bar & Grills, Spice Temple, Rosetta and Saké went to Hunter St. Hospitality under CEO Thomas Pash, with Perry as a shareholder. The Sydney sibling was No. 38 in the World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants 2026; Melbourne was not on the list.
