Why go
Gaucho's beef story is told in Argentine terms: the asado, the Pampas, the open fire. In 2018 Time Out found a board of raw display steaks, all from Argentina, and in 2013 the group's website said all its beef came from Argentina, from free-range, grass-fed British breeds. The October 2026 menu no longer names the origin of the steaks. What it does show is the full range, by weight: sirloin, ribeye, fillet and rump, from 200 g / 7 oz to 500 g / 18 oz, plus spiral-cut churrasco and a 1.2 kg / 2.6 lb platter. This is the first Gaucho, opened in 1994 in a basement on Swallow Street and now spread over three stories.
What to order

02The beef
Breed, feed and country, in that order, and the sources are not recent. In 2013 the website named Argentina as the only origin and said only free-range, grass-fed British breeds made the grade; that year the menu also carried tapa de ancho, the cap of the ribeye. In 2018 Time Out reported that every cut on the display board came from Argentina and named sirloin and colita de lomo. The 2026 menu gives cuts and weights in English, describes the ribeye as delicately marbled, and mentions Argentine beef only for the children's burger. It states no grade, no aging and no feeding days. The number: 2018, the latest source in this note to put Argentina on the steaks.
03The fire
Gaucho calls its cooking the art of open-fire cooking, and its menu says the asado is grilled over open flames. The chimichurri cuts and the chateaubriand are slow-grilled, and one ribeye is finished with a whisky glaze and smoked over cherry wood. No source names the fuel under the grill.
04The story
Gaucho dates itself to 1994. The Piccadilly page says the concept started small, in the basement of the former home of the Spanish Ambassador, before growing into the three-story building on Swallow Street, which the house calls the first Argentinian steakhouse of its kind in London. In July 2018 the group entered administration; in September Investec and SC Lowy set up a company to buy it, keeping 16 steak restaurants and 750 jobs, with Martin Williams of M Restaurants advising on its next stage. Today the group lists restaurants in nine British cities, from London to Glasgow.
