Why go

In 1952, by the date the house and Time Out both give, a tenant of the Guinea, a Young's pub in a Mayfair mews, began serving steak to the Americans then visiting London. The grill room he started is still there, behind the bar, and the house says an inn has stood on the site since 1423. The Caterer calls it what is believed to be London's first steakhouse, and Time Out its oldest. The format has changed little: a steak cabinet where the cut is chosen, silver service, dark oak and tartan carpet, suet-crust pies that the house has served since the 1940s, and dry-aged, grass-fed British beef from one family butcher. In 2026 it was No. 99 in World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants and No. 39 in Europe's 50 Best Steak Restaurants.

02The beef

The beef is British, grass-fed and dry-aged, and it is delivered fresh each day by Godfreys, a family butcher in Finsbury Park, which also supplies the lamb cutlets, sausages and offal. In 2016 Hot Dinners reported that Godfreys kept a dry-aging room dedicated to the Guinea. The house gives neither a breed nor a number of days. Sizes are written the old way, in ounces with grams beside them: sirloins of 12 oz (336 g / 12 oz) and 16 oz at £44.50 and £51, a 10 oz fillet, and the large cuts priced by the 100 g / 3.5 oz. Sauces are £4 to £5: brandy peppercorn, blue cheese, béarnaise, garlic butter, chimichurri.

03The fire

Hot Dinners described a grill and a steak cabinet at the entrance to the back dining room, where diners pick their cut. No source names the fuel.

04The story

Time Out dates the present building to the 1720s, and Hot Dinners says it has been a Young's pub since 1888. The tenant who opened the grill in the early 1950s served Scotch beef, Hot Dinners wrote, and Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner are said to have eaten there. Oisín Rogers ran the pub until 2022 and then opened The Devonshire in Soho. The Guinea reopened after a refurbishment in March 2024 with 60 more covers in the main room and two new private rooms, the 12-seat Gallery and the 16-seat Wine Room, beside the existing Boardroom; the dark oak paneling and tartan floor were kept. Thiago Brigidi was head chef and Cristiano Pellizzari general manager, per The Caterer.
