Why go

The Meat Co starts from the feedlot. Its July 2026 menu sorts the Angus by days on grain, 180, 250 and 280, and the wagyu by marble score, up to MS 11+ for Hokkaido A5. That makes it a useful place to compare feeding regimes side by side at one table. The brand comes from South Africa: Costa Tomazos and his son Johnny opened the first Meat Co in Sandton in 2000, and it reached Dubai in 2003. Today it has two restaurants in the city, at Souk Al Bahar, by the Dubai Fountain, and at Souk Madinat Jumeirah, which the house says has stood in the same spot for 20 years.

02The beef

Breed and feeding are on the menu. Angus comes in three regimes: the Signature Black Angus at 280 days on grain, Certified Australian Angus (CAAB) at 250 days on Gold grain feed, and a Premium line at 180 days; the Châteaubriand is a 150-day grain-fed fillet. Grass-fed beef is represented by Silver Fern A-grade fillet. The wagyu runs from Westholme at MS 5+ and MS 6–7, through Kiwami ribeye at MS 9+ and Mayura Station full-blood at MS 10+, to Saroma A5 from Hokkaido at MS 11+. The cuts page names Rangers Valley Black Onyx at 300 days and Stockyard Gold from Kerwee Feedlot. The steak section is titled "Super Aged Meat" and the house speaks of a unique aging process, but no source gives the number of days. The number: 280 days.

03The fire

The cuts page says the tomahawk is grilled first, then roasted in the house's Kopa charcoal oven. The July 2026 menu adds that every steak is cooked in butter and glazed with the house sauce; ask for the dairy-free option if needed.

04The story

The family line begins in 1976, when Costa Tomazos opened Squires Loft, which the house calls one of South Africa's first steakhouse chains, and listed it on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1984. In 2000 Costa and his son Johnny founded FoodFund International and launched The Meat Co in Sandton; in 2003 the brand expanded to Dubai. By 2017 the group employed 1,100 people across the UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain. FoodFund International also opened The Cullinan at Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab in 2025.
