Why go

The house dates itself to 1980: its ComemoreAqui listing calls it, 'since 1980', the traditional Argentine restaurant of Vila Madalena. Exame, in August 2021, spoke of more than 40 years, and São Paulo Secreto repeated that in October 2024, adding that it began by selling only empanadas and is now a reference for Argentine food in the city. Ana Maria Massochi, a partner aged 70 in 2021, told Exame that the spirit of the house had not changed: it is no longer the same garage, the chairs are no longer tin, but the idea is the same. The Infatuation reviewed it on Oct. 3, 2024, and recommends the bife de chorizo and the empanadas.

01What to order

  • EmpanadasThe origin of the house. An undated article names the baked beef empanada as the most ordered, plus puff-pastry versions with Roquefort and leek, and with spinach.
  • Bife de chorizoThe cut The Infatuation recommends, which it equates with a New York strip.
  • Bife ancho and bife noixNamed as classics by São Paulo Secreto (2024) and BaresSP (2021). BaresSP also lists picanha.
  • Morcillas and mollejasBlood sausage and sweetbreads, the appetizers São Paulo Secreto lists.
  • AlfajoresHomemade, as dessert, according to São Paulo Secreto.

02The beef

The house serves grilled Argentine cuts: BaresSP names bife noix, bife de chorizo and picanha, and says Ana Maria Massochi supervises the cutting and preparation herself. An undated article by Olhar Turístico says the beef is Angus or Hereford, of Scottish origin, raised on the Argentine plains; that is the article's claim, not the house's. The Infatuation describes large cuts, expertly grilled, with homemade pastas and an Argentine wine list. No source gives days of aging, grade or feeding, and no current prices in reais were found. The number: 1,200, the bottles in the climate-controlled cellar BaresSP described in 2021.

03The fire

The sources call the cooking 'grilled', 'a la parrilla' and 'grelhados argentinos', and nothing more. None says whether the fuel is charcoal or wood, or how the grill is built. Steakpedia does not fill that in.

04The story

The date is the part sources handle loosely. ComemoreAqui says 1980. Exame in 2021 says more than 40 years, which agrees; São Paulo Secreto in 2024 also says more than 40; Giraí, undated, says almost 40, and Olhar Turístico, undated, says about 30. Steakpedia uses 1980, because it is the only year given, and only the house's own listing gives it. Ana Maria Massochi is the owner named in every source; BaresSP and Giraí say she was born in Argentina, and Olhar Turístico says in Corrientes. Exame adds that the house was one of the first businesses in the area to serve espresso and that its wine list grew over time.

BaresSP, in March 2021, gave Monday to Friday noon to 10:30 pm and Saturday, Sunday and holidays noon to 5:30 pm; no newer reliable schedule was found, so call first. The Infatuation puts it at four dollar signs and notes a shaded terrace. Private events are advertised from R$ 120 per person, with no date on the page. Whether the house is open today has not been confirmed with it; the latest reviews are from October 2024.
