Why go
On May 2, 1955, according to the house's own menu, The Connaught Grill opened in the Mayfair hotel, with old English lithographs on the walls and tables set wide apart for discretion. Michel Bourdin took over the kitchen of what was then called the Grill Room in 1975, and the room closed in 2000 after 45 years. A first revival in early 2020 was cut short by the pandemic; the Grill reopened for good on March 3, 2022, with 46 covers, an open kitchen, a wood-burning grill and a rotisserie. Its steak list reads like a register: each cut gives the breed, the feeding, the days of aging and the county or prefecture it came from.

02The beef
Two British breeds and one Japanese line carry the list. The Aberdeen Angus (ribeye, tomahawk, T-bone) and the Hereford (fillet, Sunday rib, tartare at £32) are both described as grass-fed, aged 30 days and from Ayrshire; the menu does not say whether the aging is dry or wet, nor name the farm. The Japanese Black sirloin is grass- and grain-fed and aged 21 days, from Kyushu; the A5 Kobe ribeye comes from Hyogo. Grilled meats are served with Hasselback potato and white onion purée, and the sauces include béarnaise, chimichurri, roast bone marrow gravy and peppercorn.
03The fire
When the Grill reopened in 2022, Restaurant Online described an open kitchen with a wood-burning grill and a rotisserie, cooking meat and fish over British hardwood charcoal with embers of burnt apple wood. The rotisserie turns the Norfolk Black Leg chicken (half, 700 g / 25 oz, £48). The hotel's page today shows a multi-level wood-fired grill.
04The story
The Grill of Bourdin's years kept to classic cooking, and the house's menu says he never gave way to nouvelle cuisine. The 2022 room was designed by John Heah, with wall panels, tables and chairs made for it by Mira Nakashima in American black walnut, set beneath the original molded ceiling; the menu covers reproduce six woven pieces by the artist Ptolemy Mann. The kitchen is now led by executive chef Ramiro Lafuente Martínez, with Elliott Fuzi as chef de cuisine; in autumn 2025 Lafuente wrote a six-course game menu with the gunmaker Purdey, which ran until Jan. 31, 2026, per Spear's. When Time Out reviewed the room in July 2024, a three-course set lunch cost £45.
