Why go

The official website says it plainly: the very first Fogo in São Paulo opened in 1986, on Avenida Moreira Guimarães in Moema, close to Congonhas airport and São Paulo Expo. Mercado&Eventos called it, in 2024, the chain's first house in the city and counted 38 years that year, which agrees. The chain itself began in Porto Alegre and brought the gaúcho espeto corrido, the rodízio, to São Paulo in the 1980s, according to its Brazilian website. The Moema house was renovated recently, with banquet-style seating and wine displays, per the official page, and with a marble salad table, per Mercado&Eventos. It takes groups from 15 people up to a full buyout, with private and semi-private rooms.

01What to order

  • Rodízio of churrasco on skewersThe espeto corrido format, with cuts carved at the table; a Tripleseat event page counts 15 cuts and a green-and-red disc to signal pace.
  • Picanha, maminha and alcatraThe cuts BaresSP named in its 2020 listing, which also cited Argentine picanha.
  • Costela and dry-aged cutsQuintoAndar highlights the roasted ribs and the dry-aged meats among the rodízio's bovine, lamb and pork cuts.
  • LambBaresSP's 2020 listing mentions New Zealand lamb, "tenro carrezinho", among the cuts.
  • The salad tableBaresSP says the buffet is limited to salads and items that do not compete with the grilled meats; QuintoAndar lists rice, salads, cheeses and cured meats.

02The beef

Only one origin is on record for this house: BaresSP's 2020 listing cites Argentine picanha and New Zealand lamb. For the rest of the rodízio, no source states breed, feeding, grade or aging days. QuintoAndar says the rodízio includes bovine, lamb and pork, with the roasted costela and dry-aged meats as highlights, and the Brazilian website says the cuts are served on the skewer, with diners choosing the cut and the point they prefer. BaresSP also named maminha and alcatra. A Tripleseat page counts 15 cuts, but it is a chain-level event page, not a menu.

03The fire

The official page for Moema describes churrasco, meat roasted over an open flame, in the espeto corrido style. No source names the fuel or the grill used at the Moema house.

04The story

1986 is the date the official website gives for the first Fogo de Chão in São Paulo, and Mercado&Eventos's count of 38 years in 2024 agrees. The Brazilian website says the chain's first restaurant was in Porto Alegre, that the brand reached São Paulo in the 1980s, and that its first United States restaurant was in Dallas. It counts 52 restaurants, eight of them in Brazil, on an undated page; a trade article of October 2019 counted eight in Brazil and 53 in total. That article dates the first restaurant to 1979 in Porto Alegre, while QuintoAndar says 1975, so the sources do not agree. The United States site says two brothers raised on a farm in the Serra Gaúcha founded it. Today the Moema house sits among five Fogo houses in São Paulo, per QuintoAndar.
