Why go

In 1927, with Prohibition in force, Helen Gallagher and the gambler Jack Solomon opened a speakeasy on West 52nd Street; after repeal in 1933 they turned it into what the house calls Broadway's first steakhouse. Two things set the room apart today. The beef ages in a glass-fronted locker that passers-by can see, a fixture since 1964, and the steaks are cooked over hickory rather than under a broiler, as the June 2026 menu states in a single line. It was No. 73 in the World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants 2025, and Time Out, rating it 4 out of 4 for price, tells readers to check the locker tags to see which cut has aged longest.

01What to order

02The beef

The house describes its beef as USDA Prime, dry-aged on the premises. In June 2025 Resident put numbers on it: between 2,800 and 3,800 pounds of Prime beef in the locker at a time, dry-aged for 28 to 30 days below 36°F. The menu names no supplier, breed or feeding. The number: 28 to 30 days.

03The fire

The menu dated June 29, 2026 says the steaks are grilled over hickory logs; the house's own page speaks of hickory coals. Seafood is offered grilled or broiled, and the burrata comes with coal-fired peppers.

04The story

The house keeps a timeline on its site. Helen Gallagher, a former Ziegfeld girl married to Ed Gallagher of the vaudeville team Gallagher and Shean, opened the place with Jack Solomon in 1927; after Ed's death she married Solomon, and later Solomon's widow, the florist Irene Hayes, became sole owner. In 1964 Hayes sold to Jerome Brody, who opened for lunch and installed the windows of the meat locker. Dean Poll bought Gallaghers in 2013 and reopened it, renovated, in March 2014; in July 2023 he and Ken Langone opened a second Gallaghers in Boca Raton, Florida. The 2026 edition of the steak list, as republished by En Primeur Club, places the New York house at No. 87. The restaurant is counting toward its centennial in 2027.
