Why go

This is a house for a long table. Barrio Sur serves Italian-Uruguayan food in a colonial-style casona in San Ángel Inn, and takes its name from Montevideo's Barrio Sur, the district where the city's Afro-descendant community settled. One part of the table can order from the parrilla, another can share empanadas, provoleta and pasta, and the wine list leans on Uruguay, with tannat as the headline grape. It is one of four restaurants in the Barrios Uruguayos group, and downstairs a shop, Casa Barrio, sells Uruguayan bottles, dulce de leche and mate to take home.

01What to order

  • Filet in green pepper sauceEl Universal's pick in 2023; the diner chooses the doneness.
  • Asado de tira, entraña, vacíoThe grill cuts El Universal names; Food & Pleasure (2024) lists bife de lomo, vacío, tira de asado and entraña.
  • Empanadas: Criolla, Humita, del BarrioCriolla is made with picadillo; Humita with mozzarella, sweet corn and red pepper, per Food & Pleasure.
  • Provoleta and swordfish carpaccioTwo appetizers named by Food & Pleasure.
  • Pizza from the wood-fired ovenMargarita and Playa Brava are named in 2024. The oven is described as clay or stone, fed with firewood.
  • Gnocchi on the 29thEl Universal reports a custom of eating gnocchi on the 29th of the month for good luck.

02The beef

Two sources, one answer: the beef comes from the United States. El Universal (2023) says the cuts are imported from the US to guarantee quality; Chilango (2023) says the grill works with fine cuts of High Choice USA and premium beef. High Choice is a USDA Choice grade, the upper part of the Choice range. Neither article gives breeds, feeding or aging, and neither mentions Uruguayan beef. Cuts named across the three articles: asado de tira, entraña, vacío, filete and bife de lomo, plus the Parri-Burger, a grilled filet on house-made bread.

03The fire

Two ovens and one grill appear in the sources. The pizza oven is clay (Chilango and the group's site) or stone, fed with firewood (El Universal). The grilled octopus is cooked a la brasa, over embers. No article names the fuel of the parrilla itself, so Steakpedia does not state it.

04The story

Barrio Sur is one of four Barrios Uruguayos restaurants, with Barrio Norte in Lomas de Chapultepec, Entrevero in Coyoacán and Otro Barrio on the Mexico–Toluca road. No source gives the opening year or the founder. The press counts its age instead: 22 years in February 2023 (El Universal), 23 years in August 2023 (Chilango) and 22 years again in December 2024 (Food & Pleasure). Steakpedia therefore gives no opening year; the sources suggest the early 2000s.
