Why go

In 1969 a hotel-trained cook named Lam Chi-keung (林志強) opened his own steakhouse on Lai Chi Kok Road and named it after a newly built residential block beside it. Golden Phoenix (金鳳大餐廳) belongs to the Hong Kong tradition of Western food adapted to local tastes and budgets: a set of soup, bread, steak and a drink, with the steak brought on an iron plate. Etnet, in June 2025, called it a steakhouse of more than fifty years that holds to one rule, Western food that everybody can afford. Foodie's list of Hong Kong steakhouses names the Prince Edward branch its Foodie Forks 2026 Best Steakhouse.

02The beef

No source read for this entry names the origin, breed or grade of the beef, and Steakpedia does not guess. Etnet gives the one clue about its logic: to keep prices low the house moved to medium-quality cuts and paired them with a secret sauce, aiming at a texture it describes as tender and firm. The founder had learned Western cooking from hotel chefs.

03The story

The founder arrived in Hong Kong in 1944 at the age of ten, worked in hotels and abroad, and opened the Lai Chi Kok Road room in 1969. It lost money for years until he turned to a working-class district and the motto of Western food for everyone. The first branch opened in 1998 on Hillwood Road; Kowloon City followed in 2014, and a processing plant in Kwai Chung, dating from 2017, now handles part of the steak preparation. Lai Chi Kok, Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun and Tseung Kwan O opened in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023. The founder's daughters, Mary and Noble, now run the business. Foodie counts eight locations and Etnet's list adds up to seven; Steakpedia gives no total.

04The practical

G/F, Kam Fung Building, 102 Lai Chi Kok Road, Prince Edward, Kowloon (Etnet gives it as Shop A). Phone +852 2393 6054, per Foodie. The sources read do not give opening hours or a website, so call before you go. The Prince Edward room keeps the old steakhouse manner: handwritten blackboards by the windows, plates carried out on cow-shaped wooden boards, and the sauce poured at the table with the sound the house is known for. Etnet says a few beers are still served. The set menu no longer includes the salad in a champagne glass.
